The Art of Being Malaysian: A Celebration of Creativity

You’re an art lover + a concert geek? Now assemble with me!

Sharing is caring!

If creative arts are something you are fond of, believe me when I say this, you’re on the right page! So keep reading and scrolling through with me.

Despite myself being a frequent traveller, enjoying breezy air of what seems to be fresh and enjoyable, it has finally dawned on me that while capturing many photos and moments, I came to realise that I’m by definition an art admirer. In fact, many images I captured mostly display unique art values and elements from different countries.

But how did the thought come about, you might wonder as you read this through. So recently, a good friend of mine invited me to join him at an event, specifically one that showcases unique arts and creative works. Much interestingly, the next event will be hosted in Kota Kinabalu which is my hometown! Being a Sabahan, this is something that gets me excited!

I never knew Kembara RIUH until I got the memo (from this good friend of mine, obviously!). The good news is that I’ll be around when the event is set to happen soon on 14 September – 15 September, very much like a teaser to Hari Malaysia on the next day. Isn’t it awesome to have a prelude to a memorable day for our country?

Now being me, as I’ve always been curious just like how curiosity killed the cat, I discovered a sneak-peak into what RIUH is all about. First things first, RIUH is spelled in uppercase as similar as its meaning; loud and festive noise, suggesting a vibrant and exciting exploration of arts. Cool huh?

Beyond that, RIUH is a hub of creative platforms where local artists and entrepreneurs gather and grow together under the same umbrella. It’s no wonder that RIUH has been supporting to give light to the landscape of our local arts, all in the name of preserving Malaysia’s unique arts as a whole.

Years, years ago I think arts did not really get a special spotlight, neither did it get appreciated as it should. But looking at this, I have a good feeling that our arts are getting more attention and most importantly, being appreciated. While some people may possess technical talents in many other emerging industries, creative arts are seeing major improvements too.

In fact, I am today-year-old to have understood that RIUH is an initiative led by MyCreative Ventures dedicated to support local talent across all states in Malaysia. Having read this far, I trust that you will still recall that concert I mentioned above. I couldn’t digest it right when my friend said there will be a concert, or local performances, at no charge for entry. Yes, it’s free of charge! Now hold your horses buddy, this is not an ordinary local performance because the real intention is to appreciate local talents and this time around, many Sabahan singers come to rock the scene at RIUH Bah!

I’m not especially a concert geek, but I guess I’ll give it a try to vibe to the music, especially with Anuar Zain attending to get the crowd hyped. I mean, who’s not excited?! I think I saw Insomniacks, Estranged, and Midnight Fusic in the artist line-up so… that really calls for my presence!

Anyway, it’s also funny how I’ve written this long but not a single mention about where the event will be hosted is stated anywhere. Let’s gear up together for the event:

Date: 14 September 2024 & 15 September 2024

Venue: Sabah International Convention Centre, Kota Kinabalu

Time: 3 PM – midnight

Got other things? Yessss!

What is the real meaning of an event without food and artisan markets? One of the things that will always get my soul scream in full excitement is local markets showcasing local products. By now we all are aware of Malaysia being a melting pot of food and culture. I’m a proud Sabahan and as you can tell, various local foods will be available and this is the chance, not just for me, but everyone to savour the best taste of Sabah. (Confession… I haven’t tried all the local foods yet either).

Reconnecting this with my experience travelling overseas, I learned many different types of arts across different cultures. It’s true that each place I visited had its own expression of creativity, whether through traditional crafts, contemporary arts, or performing arts.

It got me thinking, I saw firsthand how art serves as a reflection of identity, history and cultural values, and most significantly it was fascinating to witness how deeply intertwined culture and creativity are.

To be honest, RIUH reminds me of these diverse experiences–visiting local artisan markets, enjoying local foods, and vibing to local music. I believe RIUH works beyond as a platform for the growth of local arts, because the way I see it now is that it acts as a bridge between people and the rich artistic heritage of Malaysia, creating a space where creativity can flourish and be celebrated by us.
